Sarawak NEM New Solar Subsidy Up to RM15,000: What You Need to Know

On 3 October 2026, Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced that the Sarawak Government would provide a solar subsidy of up to RM15,000 per home, potentially covering around half of the estimated RM30,000 cost of a residential rooftop solar installation.

The announcement was made during the Program Sarawakku Sayang 2026 in Mukah.

According to reports, the initiative is intended to encourage more Sarawak households to generate their own renewable energy, lower their monthly electricity bills by exporting solar electricity 100% back to the grid.

Pending More Details For The RM15,000 Solar Subsidy

Based on the announcement, a residential solar system costing approximately RM30,000 could receive government support of up to RM15,000.

This means eligible homeowners could potentially only need to bear around half of the solar installation cost.

However, the detailed eligibility requirements and application mechanism for the newly announced RM15,000 subsidy have not yet been officially published.

How About The Existing Sarawak NEM Subsidy?

At the moment, Sarawak already has a residential solar subsidy under Sarawak Energy’s Net Energy Metering (NEM) Scheme.

Under the existing NEM subsidy, eligible homeowners can currently receive:
1. RM8,000 for systems from 2kWac to 3.5kWac
2. RM10,000 for systems above 3.5kWac to 6kWac
3. RM12,000 for systems above 6kWac to 50kWac

The subsidy is currently available on a first-come, first-served basis and is subject to the available quota.

As of 4 October 2026, Sarawak Energy’s official NEM information still lists RM12,000 as the maximum subsidy.

Therefore, it has not yet been officially confirmed whether the newly announced RM15,000 subsidy will:
1. Replace or increase the current RM8,000–RM12,000 NEM subsidy;
2. Introduce a new subsidy tier under NEM; or
3. Be introduced as a separate residential solar subsidy programme.

Further details from the Sarawak Government and Sarawak Energy are expected before homeowners should treat the RM15,000 amount as part of the existing NEM application process.

Who Is Eligible for the Current NEM Subsidy?

Under the existing Sarawak Energy NEM subsidy scheme, applicants generally need to meet the following conditions:

Be a Sarawak Energy domestic-tariff customer
Install the solar system on a landed residential property
Be applying for a new solar PV installation
The property must not already come with an existing solar PV system
The subsidy is limited to one installation per SESCO contract account owner
Installation must be carried out by suitably certified and registered solar professionals such as Solaroo

The current programme covers qualifying new NEM contracts signed between 1 January 2025 and 31 December 2026.

These are the requirements for the existing NEM subsidy and should not yet be assumed to be the final eligibility requirements for the newly announced RM15,000 subsidy.
